Information / Guide.

How to procure Granite Monuments.

Every year, millions of Americans honor the passing of their loved ones by erecting a headstone or tombstone in their memory. If you are starting a business where you will sell headstones like slants, uprights, markers, tombstones, monument benches, columbariums etc, you will first need to establish a relationship with a wholesale granite monument manufacturer and supplier. This guide will give you thorough information to help you find a good supplier who can be a long-standing partner for your business.

What will you need to start a monument retail business?

A Showroom

One of the first things you will need is a showroom to display your granite monuments. Memorials are very sentimental products and customers are definitely going to want to see the monument they choose. Though there are thousands of granite colours and monument types, you must have at least 25 to 50 monuments on display in your showroom. Most granite monument showrooms also have a yard outside where they display more monuments in various colors.

Marketing Material

Besides having a physical inventory, you must also curate catalogs and brochures to help your customers choose monuments by looking at pictures and by reading descriptions. Most retailers in addition to brochures also allow their customers to use a tablet or PC to look at various monument types. You can also potentially look at using software that will allow you to preview etchings and scriptures on the monuments customers choose, so they can have a feel of the final monument that they will receive.

Finishing Shop

Your monument blanks can be imported. You will learn about that later in this guide. But, once you receive your blanks, you will need a production shop to carry out finishing works like etching and engraving. This is very important. While exporters in countries like India and China can provide etching and finishing services in addition to giving you granite blanks, this is a service that you must offer in your monument shop.

This is important because customers will see that you actually work on the stones yourself. There are many customers who are not too keen on using an imported stone as a memorial for their loved ones who have passed on, especially if they have been in the service. So, finishing the etching and sculpting in your own shop will help negate the fact that you are selling imported granite monuments.

Customer Service Skills

Lastly, you must also have good customer skills to interact in a delicate way with customers. All customers who walk into a monument retailer showroom are those who are bereaved and possibly still in mourning. You must therefore show tact and handle their queries with respect and patience.

Importing your granite monument blanks

One of the best ways to begin your monument business is to import monument blanks from countries like India and China. Monument blanks are nothing but your finished monuments without any etching work on them. Export companies are very seasoned in the way they provide these blanks which are sometimes also called dies and bases. All you have to do is send them pictures, dimensions and information on finishing styles that you need. You will also of course have to choose the granite stone or color to create the blank. If you are not sure about what granite colors you need to order your monuments in, you can follow this guide about choosing monument stone colors. The rest can be taken care of by the importer who will manufacture these blanks in their factories.

Once the importer manufactures your blanks, they will ship these blanks to you in a container. From production to sailing to then having these blanks delivered to your shop, it is a process that will take about 60 days or so. It can sometimes take longer and sometimes less, depending on the order that you send to the exporter in China or India.

Tips / Guides

How to Choose A Good Monument Supplier?

Must have their own factory

The monument supplier you will work with must have their own monument making factory. It is important you establish this before you begin a relationship with them. Checking on this requirement will help you avoid brokers pretending or fronting themselves to be suppliers. Suppliers with factories will be able to give you prices that are a lot more competitive than what brokers can provide, as an extra layer of middlemen are cut out from the process.

When enquiring about their factory, you must also ask about the type of machinery that they have. From cutting machines to polishing machines to the number of processing bays, information about the capacity and capability of their factory will give you confidence to order monuments from them.

Must own their own granite quarries

The monument supplier you work with must ideally own their own granite quarries. This is important as suppliers and manufacturers who own their quarries will be able to give you consistent looking monuments for a long period of time. Suppliers who buy their stones from quarries will often purchase from a lot of quarries as they are just looking for the best prices. This will result in them sending you orders that are not consistent. Sometimes, even the same order will have monuments that are not consistent in nature, as they might have bought the stone from different quarries.

Such problems can be avoided by working with a good monument supplier who will own their own quarries or hold long-term leases on quarries that they have been using for years and decades at a time.

Must be an experienced exporter

The supplier that you choose must have a long history of exporting. This is important as exporting monuments from India or China is a laborious process that requires a lot of paperwork. Working with a new exporter will mean that they will bumble their way through the exporting process, with many delays and uncertainties. A seasoned exporter will be able to give you a very clear roadmap as to how your monuments can be exported, in what timelines and with all the paperwork you need to import it into the USA or Canada. Ideally, you should have nothing to do in terms of paperwork when importing monuments from India or China. The grunt work will be done by the exporter.

Another advantage of working with an experienced exporter is that they will have very good relationships with shipping companies. These relationships will allow for quick shipping at competitive rates.

Must be a MBNA Member

Exporters are allowed to be MBNA members. The Monument Builders of North America is a trusted organization that maintains a database of monument retailers, wholesalers and exporters. Companies on their database are vetted and exporter companies on their list have usually visited the USA and Canada and have also done prior business there. If the supplier isn’t listed on the MBNA database, you risk working with suppliers who don’t have your long-term interests in mind.
